The Situation of Children in Nepal
The situation of Nepalese children is not fundamentally different to the one found in other developing nations. However, the traditional family hierarchies and the Hindu caste system make it particularly difficult for girls to enjoy equal opportunities and get an education. |

Bal Mandir Children's Home, Kathmandu
An historic palace of the Rana oligarchy in the capital Kathmandu: a stroke of luck for around 300 homeless children and orphans. The living conditions of poor and orphaned children are often disastrous in developing countries. In comparison, the little girls and boys at the Bal Mandir children's home are well looked after.
Nevertheless, the children's home is far from comfortable since the building has neither heating nor hot water, and the winters are severe. Hygienic conditions also leave much to be desired.
